ChatGPT for Cover Letters and CVs: Use AI Well

Updated September 24, 2026

Yes, you can use ChatGPT and other AI tools to write your CV and cover letter. Plenty of job seekers do, and it is not cheating as long as every fact is true and the text sounds like you. AI is excellent at analysing a job ad, spotting keywords, producing a first draft and proofreading, but it knows nothing about your career and will happily invent the rest.

This guide gives you prompts you can copy, a checklist for making AI text personal, what you should never paste into a chatbot, and a simple way to rehearse interviews with AI.

Is it OK to use ChatGPT for a cover letter?

Using AI in a job search is now common, and most employers do not expect you to have written every word unaided. What matters is not how the text was produced, but whether it is accurate, relevant and genuinely yours.

The line is the content. If the AI adds a skill you do not have, a result you did not achieve or a job title you never held, you are the one who has to defend it in the interview. A CV with made-up details can cost you the job, even after you have started.

A few organisations explicitly ask candidates not to use AI, or set a written task to be completed on your own. If the job ad says so, respect it.

What AI does well, and what it does badly

AI saves you the most time when it works on material you already have. It is weakest when it has to supply content that only you know.

AI is good at:

  • Analysing the job ad and separating real requirements from filler
  • Finding the keywords and technical terms your CV should include
  • Writing a first draft so you never face a blank page
  • Turning a long, clumsy sentence into a short, precise one
  • Proofreading for typos, repetition and stiff corporate language
  • Translating a CV between English and Danish as a starting point

AI is bad at:

  • Knowing facts about you: it guesses and invents numbers, dates and responsibilities
  • Writing with personality: without your input the tone turns generic and over-eager
  • Keeping its distance from the job ad: it tends to echo the ad's phrasing word for word
  • Local norms: it often writes too long and too boastfully for a Danish or European reader
  • Judging what matters most in your particular career

The most common mistake is asking for "a cover letter for this job" with only the job ad as input. The AI then has nothing to work with except the ad itself, and the result is a paraphrase of it that the employer recognises instantly.

ChatGPT prompts for CVs and cover letters that work

Good prompts contain three things: a clear role, your own material and firm limits on length and tone. Use them in order, analysis first and writing second, so the AI builds on your facts rather than its guesses.

Prompt 1: Analyse the job ad

You are an experienced recruiter. Here is a job ad:

[paste the job ad]

1. List the 5 most important requirements in order of priority.

2. Which keywords and technical terms should appear in a CV for this role?

3. Which soft skills does the organisation value, reading between the lines?

Answer briefly in bullet points. Do not write a cover letter yet.

Prompt 2: Match your experience to the requirements

Here is my CV with personal details removed:

[paste CV]

Compare it with the requirements from the job ad above.

Show in a table which requirements I meet and with which specific experience.

Be honest about the requirements I do not meet. Do not invent experience I do not have.

Prompt 3: First draft of the cover letter

Write a draft cover letter of no more than 350 words for the Buyer role at Nordlys Retail in Copenhagen.

Use only facts from my CV and these notes: [2-3 concrete examples with numbers and results].

My motivation: [why this organisation, in your own words].

Tone: direct, warm and down to earth, suited to a Danish workplace. Avoid superlatives and clichés such as 'passionate' and 'dynamic'.

Do not open with 'I am writing to apply'. Do not repeat the job ad's wording verbatim.

Once you have a draft, short follow-ups do the rest: "Make the second paragraph 30% shorter", "Rewrite the opening so it focuses on the employer's needs" or "Highlight every claim that is not in my CV". The last one is especially useful because it exposes exactly where the AI has made something up.

What should you not share with ChatGPT?

When you paste text into a general chatbot, it is stored on someone else's servers, and depending on the service and your settings, the conversation may be kept or used to train the model. Strip out personal data before you paste your CV.

  • National ID numbers, such as a Danish CPR number, which never belong on a CV anyway
  • Home address, phone number and personal email
  • Date of birth, health information and other sensitive details
  • Names and contact details of your referees
  • Confidential figures, clients or internal projects from your current employer

Replace them with placeholders such as [NAME] and [PHONE], then add the real details back in your own document at the end. Check the privacy settings of the chatbot you use as well; many services let you switch off the use of your chats for training.

How to make AI writing sound like you

AI text only sounds like you if you feed it with you. The more concrete details, your own phrases and your own opinions you provide, the less it has to invent.

  1. Give the AI something you wrote yourself, such as an old cover letter or a LinkedIn post, and ask it to match your style.
  2. Write your examples as notes with numbers and outcomes before you ask for a draft.
  3. Write the opening and your motivation yourself. Employers read those parts most closely, and they are where AI is weakest.
  4. Read the draft aloud. Cut every sentence you would never say in an interview.
  5. Check every claim against your CV. If you cannot give an example of it, delete it.
Example: from generic AI text to your own voice

AI draft: I am a passionate, results-driven procurement professional who thrives in fast-paced, dynamic environments.

Rewritten: At Fjordvik Construction I renegotiated our three largest supplier contracts and cut delivery times from six weeks to four. I would like to bring the same kind of improvements to Nordlys Retail.

The rewrite is not more sophisticated; it is simply specific. A named workplace, a measurable change and a link to the new employer beat any adjective. For more models, see our cover letter examples.

Can recruiters tell if you used AI?

Often, yes. Not because they run special software, but because unedited AI text has a recognisable pattern. When you read dozens of applications for the same role, the same phrases stand out. AI detectors are unreliable, so it is rarely a tool that gives you away; it is the text itself.

Typical signs of generic AI writing:

  • Clichés such as "passionate", "dynamic environment", "thrive" and "in today's fast-paced world"
  • The job ad's own sentences repeated almost verbatim
  • Claims without evidence: "I am an excellent communicator"
  • Rhythmic triplets of adjectives and paragraphs of suspiciously equal length
  • Over-the-top enthusiasm, which reads as especially odd to Danish employers who value modesty and directness
  • Nothing that could not have been written by any other candidate

The real problem is rarely that a letter was written with AI; it is that it says nothing. An application that could have come from anyone gets rejected, whoever wrote it.

Using AI for your CV: chatbot or dedicated tool?

A general chatbot can rephrase bullet points and find keywords, but it cannot produce a finished, well-designed CV, and you have to keep track of what is true yourself.

Use a chatbot for individual parts of your CV:

  • Ask it to rewrite duties as achievements with an action and an outcome
  • Get suggestions for a short personal profile from your own notes
  • Ask which skills from the job ad are missing from your CV
  • Check that tense and style are consistent throughout

Dedicated tools start from your own profile and the job ad instead of a blank chat. With CVm8 you build your profile once, paste the job ad, and the AI writes a tailored CV and cover letter from your own details, which you can edit in the browser and download as a PDF. Whatever you use, the rule is the same: read everything before you send it.

Practise job interviews with AI

AI makes a surprisingly good interview sparring partner because you can practise as often as you like without worrying what it thinks. Ask it to pose one question at a time and answer as if it were the real thing, out loud if your app supports voice.

Prompt: Rehearse a job interview

You are the head of procurement at Nordlys Retail, interviewing me for the role in the job ad above.

Ask me one question at a time and wait for my answer.

Mix technical questions, questions about teamwork and a few tough ones, such as my weaknesses or a gap in my CV.

After each answer, give brief feedback on whether I was specific enough and suggest how to improve it.

Use the feedback to find your strongest examples, not to memorise scripted answers. A rehearsed AI answer sounds just as generic in the room as it does on paper. You will find the classic questions in our guide to job interview questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheating to use ChatGPT for a cover letter?
No, as long as the content is true and you stand behind every word. It is no different from asking a friend or careers adviser for help. If the job ad asks you not to use AI, respect that.
Can employers tell if you used AI?
AI detectors are unreliable, but unedited AI text is easy to spot from clichés, echoes of the job ad and a lack of concrete examples. If you edit thoroughly and add your own experience, it will not read like AI.
What should I ask ChatGPT to write a good cover letter?
Give it the job ad, your CV without personal details, two or three concrete examples with results and your motivation in your own words. Ask for a draft of no more than 350 words in a direct tone without clichés, and tell it not to invent experience.
Is it safe to upload my CV to ChatGPT?
Remove ID numbers, your address, phone number and referee details first, because chats may be stored and, depending on your settings, used for training. Check the privacy settings of the chatbot you use.
Can AI write my whole CV?
AI can draft it and sharpen how you describe your experience, but it can only work with the information you give it. Always check dates, job titles, figures and skills yourself before you send it.
