How to Explain Employment Gaps on Your CV

Updated October 14, 2026

An employment gap on your CV is rarely a problem in itself, as long as you explain it briefly, honestly and without apologising. What makes a recruiter hesitate is an unexplained gap, not the break itself. One line on your CV, plus a sentence or two in your cover letter or interview, is usually enough to close the question and move the focus back to what you can do.

This guide gives you example wording for the most common reasons: unemployment, illness, parental leave, travel, relocation and caring for family. You will also learn where the explanation belongs, how much to share and what to say when the question comes up in an interview, including what is normal if you are applying for jobs in Denmark.

Do employment gaps look bad on a CV?

Most careers include breaks. People are made redundant, fall ill, have children, move country or take time out to travel. Experienced recruiters have seen it all and know that a pause says nothing about how well you do your job.

What creates doubt is uncertainty. A CV with an unexplained year-long jump invites the reader to guess, and guesses rarely go in your favour. So the aim is not to hide the gap but to give it a short, neutral frame.

  • Short gaps of under three to six months usually need no explanation. Taking a few months to find the right role is normal.
  • Longer gaps deserve a line on your CV so nobody has to guess.
  • Gaps far in the past matter less the more relevant experience you have had since.

How to explain unemployment on your CV

Unemployment is the most common reason for a gap, and there is nothing to be ashamed of. Roles disappear in restructures, fixed-term contracts end and companies close. Keep it short and show what you did with the time.

A longer period out of work is rarely empty. You have been job hunting, perhaps taking courses, doing a work placement, freelancing or volunteering. Include whatever is relevant to the job you are applying for.

Example: a period of unemployment on a CV

Career break: job search and professional development, March 2025 - January 2026

My role as Logistics Coordinator at Nordlys Retail was made redundant in a restructure.

Completed a warehouse management course and an advanced Excel certification.

Six-week work placement at Harbour Transport, planning delivery routes.

Avoid "Unemployed" as a job title. "Career break", "Job search and professional development" or "Freelance projects" are neutral and honest. You also do not need to explain how you left your last job beyond a short, factual reason such as redundancy.

How to explain a gap due to illness

Your health is private. In Denmark, an employer may generally only ask about your health if it is significant for your ability to do the specific job, and many other countries have similar protections. There is no need to put diagnoses, treatment or details on your CV.

The key message is that you are ready now. A single line is enough, and many people choose something even more neutral, such as "Personal leave" or "Health-related career break".

Example: illness described briefly and honestly

Health-related career break, June 2024 - April 2025

Fully recovered and ready to return to work. Kept my skills current with a project management course during the period.

If you need adjustments at work, you can decide whether and when to mention it. Some people prefer to be open in the cover letter, others wait until the interview or the offer stage. Both are fine.

Should parental leave go on your CV?

Parental leave is a normal part of working life, and in Denmark it is common not to treat it as a gap at all. If you were employed during your leave, you were still in that job, so the period simply sits inside that role on your CV.

If you stayed at home longer than your leave, or were not employed when your child arrived, a short line such as "Parental leave" or "Career break to care for young children" is enough. Whether you mention it is your choice.

It helps to know your rights. In Denmark, pregnancy and parental leave may not count against you when hiring under the Equal Treatment Act, so you are not obliged to answer a question about whether you are pregnant or plan to have children. You do not have to explain more than you want to.

Example: parental leave after a role ended

Parental leave, September 2024 - August 2025

At home with our two children after my contract ended. Stayed connected to the field through a local finance professionals' network.

How to put travel, a gap year or relocation on your CV

A gap year or long trip can be a strength if you present it as a deliberate choice. Focus on what you gained that is relevant to the job: languages, independence, work along the way or volunteering.

  • Work abroad: if you worked at a hostel, on a farm or at a ski school, list it as experience.
  • Volunteering: give the organisation, country and your role.
  • Languages: if you learnt Spanish over six months in South America, add it under languages with an honest level.
  • Skip the holiday tone: "partied my way round Asia" does not belong on a CV.
Example: gap year with volunteering

Gap year and travel, South America, August 2024 - June 2025

Volunteered for three months at a school in Cusco, Peru, teaching English to children aged 8-10.

Learnt Spanish to conversational level.

Moved to Denmark with a partner and are now job hunting? That is a common and easily understood gap. Write something like "Relocation to Denmark and Danish language studies" and include your language school level, since it shows commitment to building a life and career here. Our guide to the Danish CV format covers what else local employers expect.

How to explain time spent caring for a family member

Caring for an ill parent, a partner or a child with extra needs is one of the most widely respected reasons for a break, yet many people hesitate to write it down. You do not need to share details. A short, honest line is enough, and it is fine to leave out names and diagnoses.

Caring often builds qualities employers value: planning, dealing with public services and staying calm under pressure. You can mention them briefly, but do not present caring as a job it was not.

Example: caring for a family member

Career break to care for a family member, January 2025 - November 2025

Full-time carer for a close relative during a long illness. That period has ended and I am ready to return to full-time work.

Should you explain the gap on your CV or in your cover letter?

On your CV, give the dates and a neutral heading of one or two lines, placed in your timeline where the break happened. That shows the reader nothing is being hidden.

In your cover letter you usually do not need to mention the gap. Do so only if the break is long, recent and important for understanding your application, and keep it to one sentence that ends with why you are ready now. The rest of the letter should be about the job. See our guide on how to write a cover letter for the structure.

If the break led you to change direction, read our guide to changing careers. And if you want help wording the line, “Improve with AI” in CVm8 can rephrase it briefly and neutrally while flagging any claims worth double-checking, so your CV stays honest.

What to say when an interviewer asks about a gap

The question usually sounds like "What were you doing during this period?" and is rarely meant as a trap. Answer with a simple three-part structure:

  1. What happened: one honest sentence without unnecessary detail.
  2. What you did or learnt: a course, volunteering, or simply that you dealt with the situation.
  3. Why you are ready now: and why this particular job makes sense for you.

For example: "My role was made redundant in a restructure. I used the time for a warehouse management course and a placement where I planned delivery routes, which is exactly the kind of work I am looking forward to doing here." For more model answers, see our guide to job interview questions.

Frequently asked questions

How long of a gap on a CV is acceptable?
There is no fixed limit. Gaps of a few months rarely need explaining, while anything over about six months deserves a short line on your CV.
Should I put unemployment on my CV?
Yes, if the period is longer than a few months. Use a neutral heading such as "Career break: job search and professional development" and list any courses, placements or volunteering.
Do I have to tell an employer I was off sick?
You do not have to share diagnoses or details. A short, neutral explanation such as "Health-related career break" is enough, followed by the fact that you are ready to work.
Can an employer in Denmark ask if I plan to have children?
No. Employers in Denmark may not ask about pregnancy or plans to have children, or let it influence a hiring decision.
Is it OK to use only years on a CV to hide a gap?
Years alone are common, but do not use them just to disguise a break. If the question comes up in an interview, an honest explanation comes across much better.
